What is smile design, and do you require it?

Smile Designing is a comprehensive dental treatment consisting of multiple procedures, with the final goal of achieving a pleasant and impressive smile. But it’s not just all about looks; smile designing is also required to improve and maintain your overall oral health. The scope of smile designing involves procedures like fixing gaps between teeth, dark gums, crooked or overlapped teeth, teeth whitening procedures, etc.

What all procedures are involved in smile design dental treatment?

The treatments that can be undertaken to give you your perfect smile include

Closing gaps between front teeth: These gaps could be present naturally or could have formed due to some habits or even because of injuries to the mid-face region. The gap can be filled up using multiple treatment modalities depending on how big the gap is, the duration of the treatment, and the budget.
The treatments vary from a basic tooth coloured filling which can be done in one appointment, to veneers which are very thin tooth coloured ceramic covers placed on the outer surface of the teeth, to having clear aligner or braces.
While veneers require about 2 weeks for their final placement, clear aligners and braces are a longer course of treatment usually requiring a few months for treatment
Lightening Dark Gums/ dark patches in gums: This happens due to the presence of excess pigment called melanin in the outer layer of the gums. The process of lightening the gums can be undertaken very easily and painlessly using Lasers.
Our smile design doctor at Navi Mumbai will start the process by applying a surface anaesthesia to numb the area, and with the help of blue laser the upper darker layer of the gums would gently be scraped off.
Complete healing and return to the natural colour of the gums without the dark patches will occur within a week of the treatment.

Treating overlapped / Misaligned teeth: There can be crowding/ Misaligned teeth that would spoil the appearance of your smile. Treatments would involve veneers or braces / clear aligners. For best results, the treatment might be a combination of both, too.
Braces would involve the use of brackets and wires on the teeth, using pulling or pushing forces to bring them into proper position. Braces are fixed in the mouth and are only removed by the orthodontist at the end of the treatment.
Clear aligners on the other hand, are removable and more aesthetic, as they are not seen in the mouth. For this process, our smile design doctor would take an impression of the teeth & would provide sequential trays that would be required to be worn for a specific period of time.
Replacing Missing teeth: At times there are certain front teeth that have been missing since birth. These missing teeth might cause gaps or loss of symmetry, creating gaps in a perfect smile. The missing tooth can be replaced using a bridge or implants.
A bridge is placed using the support of adjacent teeth, one in the front and one at the back of the missing tooth. Before a bridge is placed, the supporting teeth are required to be shaped, and an impression is taken and sent to the lab for fabrication. The bridge is then fixed in the mouth using dental cements.
The other option of implants for replacing missing teeth is more conservative of the adjacent teeth and is longer lasting. In this process, a screw is placed inside the bone and is allowed to attach to the bone for a period of 3-4 months, after which a ceramic tooth is attached on top of it.
Providing proper shape to malformed teeth: At times, some of the front teeth might be malformed. This most commonly occurs in the upper lateral front teeth as part of the evolutionary process. Malformed teeth can result in asymmetry and should be fixed using veneers or ceramic caps covering the malformed tooth.
Changing the smile line/ treating a gummy smile: : A gummy smile is when a large portion of the gums are seen when you smile. The reasons could be a high lip line, excessive gums, a short tooth or a combination of all of it. The treatment could involve multiple procedures, including -
- Crown lengthening in case of a short tooth or excessive gums: in this procedure, the gums are anesthetized and a small portion of the gums of 1-2 mm is removed around the crown of the tooth with the help of a laser.
- Easing the lip attachment to the gums in case of a high lip line, again done using lasers.
